The Washington International Law Journal (WILJ) is the Pacific Northwest’s premier publication dedicated to international and comparative legal scholarship. Since its founding in 1990, the Journal has served as a leading platform for rigorous analysis of pressing legal issues that transcend national borders. WILJ generally publishes two to three issues each year—always two general issues and often one specialized issue—showcasing innovative research and commentary from distinguished academics, experienced practitioners, and influential policymakers.
Originally established with a focus on Pacific Rim legal developments, the Journal has continually evolved to reflect the changing dynamics of the global legal landscape. Today, WILJ embraces a broader scope, engaging with diverse regions and disciplines to examine how international, transnational, and comparative law intersect with contemporary challenges. From trade and human rights to emerging technologies and environmental governance, the Journal provides a forum for thoughtful dialogue that advances understanding and shapes policy worldwide.
In 2025, the Washington International Law Journal embarked on a significant expansion with the launch of the WILJ Blog. Founded by Volume 35’s Editorial Board, the blog is designed as a dynamic companion to the Journal’s traditional issues. The blog’s aim is to provide timely, accessible, and dynamic analysis of global legal developments while amplifying diverse scholarly and practitioner voices. This platform enables WILJ to respond rapidly to emerging international challenges, foster interdisciplinary conversations, and engage a broader audience beyond the academy.
Together, WILJ’s traditional issues and blog function to position the Pacific Northwest as a region ripe for generating and sustaining international legal discussions.
